In Parashat Beshalach, the sea splits.
It is cinematic, dramatic, unforgettable. A once in history miracle that reshapes a people forever. And yet, almost immediately after that moment, the Torah shifts our attention elsewhere.
To food.
The Israelites step into the wilderness and panic. What will we eat? How will we survive? How will we know we are truly being cared for?
God does not respond with another spectacle. No thunder. No walls of water.
Instead, God sends manna.
Each morning, a quiet miracle appears. Enough for that day. No more, no less. Those who try to save it for later discover that hoarded security does not last. Trust must be renewed daily.
The splitting of the sea inspires awe. Manna builds trust.
This distinction matters, especially when we think about family and legacy.
Many of us remember the “wow moments” from our childhoods. The big trips. The grand gestures. The unforgettable holidays. Those moments matter, but they are not what sustained the Israelites in the wilderness.
Manna did.
Manna was steady. Reliable. Unspectacular. It arrived again and again, quietly teaching that care does not need to shout to be real.
Grandparenting often lives in this tension.
There is a desire to create memorable moments, to give generously, to make an impact that will last. But what grandchildren trust most is not the occasional miracle. It is the ongoing presence.
The call that comes every week.
The story told again without rushing.
The recipe made slowly, even when it gets messy.
The reassurance that says, I am here, today, and tomorrow too.
Parents often live with urgency. Grandparents live with perspective. You have seen that love is not built in moments of drama, but in rhythms of care.
Manna teaches that we do not nourish the future by hoarding influence or forcing meaning. We nourish it by showing up consistently, offering what is needed now, and trusting that it will be enough.
This is not passive. It is deeply intentional.
Choosing presence over performance.
Relationship over control.
Trust over anxiety.
In many ways, this is the quiet wisdom grandparents carry better than anyone else.
You do not need to split seas for your grandchildren. You need to be manna.
This is the work I support through Grand Plan coaching. Helping grandparents release pressure, clarify what truly matters, and step into their role with confidence and calm. Legacy is not built in one grand gesture. It is built through steady, loving transmission.
And like manna, that kind of nourishment leaves a lasting imprint.
A small Beshalach gift:
If you would like, I am including a simple “manna cookie” recipe below, along with a few gentle conversation prompts you can use while baking with grandchildren. No lesson required. Just time, hands, and presence.
Sometimes the holiest moments arrive quietly.
Shabbat Shalom!
