BECOMING THE GRANDPARENT YOU WANT TO BE

Many Jewish grandparents feel a deep desire to be close, meaningful, and influential in their grandchildren’s lives but are not always sure how to do that in today’s complex and changing family world.

They want to pass down more than stories or holiday meals. They want to transmit identity, wisdom, and spiritual grounding but often without clear language, structure, or confidence in how that actually looks in practice.

Becoming the Grandparent You Want to Be is a six-week guided workshop that helps Jewish grandparents step into that role with joy, intention, and connection.

Through Torah learning, reflective practice, and a small group experience, participants begin to clarify not only what they want to pass down but who they are becoming in the process.

What Participants Are Experiencing

One participant described the experience this way:

“Studying our forefathers and foremothers as intimately flawed and deeply human has given me a new lens as a grandparent. Pairing that ancient wisdom with living tools like the vision board makes the learning feel not just meaningful but actionable, a roadmap I am actually building for myself.”

She also shared:

“I am growing more at ease with trusting myself as a grandparent, leaning into my own experience rather than second-guessing it. It gave me a kind of permission to be exactly who I already am.”

And perhaps most powerfully:

“The image of digging a well has become one I return to again and again, the necessary descent into depth, carrying one’s history into that place, and the faith that if you keep digging, you will find living water.”

This is the kind of shift this work creates: not adding more tasks, but changing how grandparents understand their role.

The Grand Plan Method: A Torah-Based Framework for Modern Grandparenting

Each week we draw from the lives of the Avot and Imahot, the first Jewish grandparents, not as historical figures, but as living models of emotional depth, relational wisdom, and intergenerational connection.

JoyFul: Avraham + Sarah

We explore how Avraham’s forward-looking vision and Sarah’s capacity for laughter and joy can help grandparents reconnect to hope, delight, and emotional presence in their relationships.

We reflect on:

  • What joy looks like in my grandparenting
  • How I notice and create meaningful moments
  • How to hold both struggle and laughter in the same life

Intentional: Yitzchak + Rivkah

We learn from Yitzchak’s inner depth and Rivkah’s clarity and courage to act.

We explore:

  • Trusting my instincts as a grandparent
  • Acting with purpose rather than hesitation
  • Clarifying the values I want to transmit

As one participant shared, this process helped her begin to trust herself more and second-guess herself less.

Connection: Yaakov + Rachel/Leah

We explore the complexity of relationships; repair, boundaries, longing, and difference.

We reflect on:

  • How connection is maintained across generations
  • How to navigate differences in parenting style or Jewish practice
  • How to hold both love and boundaries with integrity

Participants name this as the most emotionally resonant part of the journey, where inherited patterns and present relationships begin to shift.

Guiding Questions We explore:

  • Who am I as the grandparent I aspire to be?
  • How do I share values in ways my grandchildren can truly receive?
  • What does Torah teach us about intergenerational responsibility?
  • How do I navigate differences in family life with clarity and love?
  • What does it mean to contribute intentionally to Jewish continuity?
  • How do I move from inheritance to intention?
